Halloween at Shimada Koko!

Brass Band students....drummers! Sayaka and Emi carved this kabocha (pumpkin)
Ryo and Jun posing in their costumes. Ryo was a ghost and Jun was a zombie.
Emi and Sayaka...pumpkin carving extraordinaires! Emi is a witch and Sayaka is a neko (cat).
Yuki and Tomoyasu (Tom). Yuki is a zombie and Tom is a pumpkin.

Today the seven of us dressed in our Halloween costumes and carved a pumpkin.

I was a Shimako Student. I wore the white-collared shirt with the navy blue skirt, blue knee high socks and black shoes. I wanted to be a dead Shimako student, but the fake blood we tried making in class was really stupid looking and sticky, so I decided not to go that way.

The kids will tell you about their costumes and what they think about Halloween in general.

I love Halloween, and I was pretty excited that the kids were interested in Genkily making Halloween activities and costumes. I had fun.

Look at the pumpkin!!! It’s a little backwards, but cute, right? だいじょぶ。
Here in Japan, pumpkins are Green!!!!!

What's that Called?

Hey Yuki, I saw your post of that beautiful looking, kite-shaped sushi. Where did you find that? Did your mom make that or was it at a restaurant? It made me laugh when you refered to me as Gaijinface.

I really liked our music day...and the chopin was my favorite too!!!!!! I did also enjoy the Twinkle Twinkle little star song, though. Did you? It was amazing to me that the school would let every single student ride to the Music Hall. It's a few kilometers away, wouldn't you say?

I was happy to see that you posted and wrote about our sushi day.

So go ahead and laugh at me cuz Ido sensei and students did. Apparently, my bad japanese is halarious to people. Is it funny to you?

Sushi Day

Emi is stirring the vinegar into the rice, while Jun displays the Inari that we made. The kids thought it would be funny if they filled one of the aburage with wasabi, hidden by the rice, and try to make Suzuki-sensei (their homeroom teacher) eat it.
The boys and I (not photographed) watch as the girls show us how to top the rice in a pretty fashion.
Before itadakimasu-ing.
Tomoyasu (Tom), Ryosuke (Ryo), Yuki, Jun, Emi, Sayaka.....posing with ohashi

Today, we made chirashi zushi. Yuki brought the canned tuna, Tom (Tomoyasu) brought the vinegar, Sayaka-wasabi, Emi-aburage, Jun-soy sauce, Ryosuke-ikura, and I brought the rice and fish. Sayaka and Emi were the leaders of the group and showed us all what to do. But when I told the boys that they looked like pros--they admitted to never making sushi before. "Then why do you cut the fish so well?" I asked. "Because we imagined it!" This made me laugh, and laugh, and laugh.

Here is the link to a short video watching the girls top the rice with decorative fish. Deerhoof's "Panda" plays in the background.

Welcome to Shimada Koko

So, I sent out a bulletin announcing our website to others in Shizuoka-ken. I am also sharing this with high school students from El Cerrito High School, our sister school in California who have a Japanese language program. There are also other California students who are interested in learning more about school life in Japan. I want to welcome all of you to our website. Though we have had some technical difficulties during our internet time, we have tried our best to get this to you in a timely fashion. Our English conversation class only has 1 class period per every 2 weeks to use the computer room, so we will do our best to use the time efficiently so that we can share our thoughts with you, as well as pictures and other things that you may like to see. Both I and the students would love to hear your questions, comments and feedback about our site. If your school has a site, we would love to link up to it so that we can speak with each other.
Right now, we are in the middle of midterms, so our time is even more limited, however, during the rest of this month, we will be learning about Halloween and begin making our Halloween costumes for our party. We will share some pictures and hopefully video of our progress. My students and I would really enjoy hearing from you, and we would especially love to hear from other students interested in speaking English and Japanese with us. Bye bye, See You!

Speech Contests

In Japan, we have speech contests where students write and memorize a speech and perform it in a contest setting. Here at Shimada Koko, we have had participated in a few speech contests since I have been here. One in Shimada City, were Mayuko and Yukie delivered their speeches. Yukie won 1st place speaking about Kyudo and Mayuko won 2nd place speaking about becoming a flight attendant. In Shizuoka, Akie won 1st place in the show and tell speech about the D.A.R.E. program she experienced while living in America during her childhood.
In Fujieda, I co-judged a middle school speech contest that proved to be one difficult task. It is extremely difficult to choose the best speech among so many great speeches. Also, I had to give my own speech, which was very scary.
The last contest I attended was in Mishima where Akie gave her D.A.R.E speech once again and was competing against the other top speakers in our ken. Though she did not win, she delivered her speech without any mistakes and did a fantastic job. I was so proud of her.

Hello New Friends

We have had some trouble getting access to computers, so we have prepared things to share with you new friends and visitors of our site, only have not had a chance to share them with you. I am glad that tomorrow we will have the chance to finally introduce ourselves.

I am an ALT with the JET program who teaches an English conversation class in Shimada, Japan. Our class has six students who meet twice a week. The kids in this class expressed interest in making a homepage during our first few days of class. They want to have a chance to experience real English by communicating via our homepage blog. They are interested in meeting people from all over who want to communicate in English. They also want to share information about life in a high school in Japan. Hopefully, other people from Shimada Koko, Shizuoka High Schools, American High Schools, as well as other people who are learning English will be excited about reading what these kids have to say.

Some of the things we plan on posting on this site are: information about our school, information about the towns we live in, questions about where our readers are from and what their schools are like, what we all think about things, and other random subjects that pop into these kids' minds.

As the coordinator of this page, i would like to open the invitation to join our blog to anyone who wishes to write on this blog. If you would like to join us or have us make a link to your website, please email me at axlelaser2@hotmail.com.

Hello! My name is Himi Jimi and I am a 3rd year student at Shimada High School.

I am in the baking magic cookies club. I am very good at making cakes too.

My favorite thing to do is to dye my hair different colors. Last week, my hair was pink.

Today, it is orange.

I have a pet mouse named Ichigo who loves to eat my cakes.

She is a white mouse, but I like to color her too.

Her favorite color to be is red like a strawberry.

Do you want to see a picture of my mouse? How about a picture of my beautiful Mt. Fuji cake?

If yes, please write me a letter!!!!!
